Susan K.'s Story

The Story Wizard is lame. I am a teacher and always have been. I got a BA in music, and music continues to enrich my life as an avocation. My MA is in special ed, and I just noticed that in the '69 yearbook, I listed special ed teacher as the career I was interested in. I moved to Phoenix in 1975. I've been married since 1983 to Richard Plattner, who -- like Nancy Drew's father, Carson -- is a prominent attorney. My kids, Sam & Kate, were born in 1985 and 1986. After 10 years of teaching special ed in inner city public schools, I took a leave of absence to have kids and, missing teaching, started a tutoring service (1985). e whatsoever, it has grown and I now hire about 12-14 part-time tutors who work from my office. I see a few students and supervise the office and tutors, but spend relatively little time there. My life is rich and full, and I'm very, very glad that whoever told me in high school (and there were several who did) that those were the best years of my life was dead wrong. High school was a necessary phase, I guess, and in my nearly golden years I can conjure up a bit of sentimentality about them (a very little bit), but I'm quite content to be ageing -- gracefully of course -- and to have learned to be more satisfied with who I am than I was in those uncomfortable years.
